Acoustic performance is measured on the complete door set, not simply the door leaf. Every component contributes to the overall sound reduction, including the door leaf, frame, glazing systems, intumescent and acoustic seals, threshold details, ironmongery and the quality of installation. Even small variations in component specification or installation can significantly reduce both acoustic performance and fire certification.

Our testing is carried out in accordance with BS EN ISO 10140, the recognised European Standard for laboratory measurement of airborne sound insulation. The results are expressed as the Weighted Sound Reduction Index (Rw), measured in decibels (dB), which provides a single-number rating of the doorset’s ability to reduce airborne noise transmission.

Typical acoustic performance ratings include:

•    Rw 30 dB – Suitable for general applications requiring basic sound reduction.
•    Rw 35 dB – Commonly specified for residential apartments and housing developments.
•    Rw 40–45 dB – Frequently required in healthcare environments, hotels, offices and education facilities where higher levels of privacy are essential.
•    Rw 50 dB and above – High-performance acoustic solutions for specialist environments requiring exceptional sound insulation.
